Seit 1987 steht ALMA für die Zusammenarbeit der beiden Künstler Alf Hofstetter und Max Markus Frei. Unter Zusammenarbeit verstehen sie für gewöhnlich nicht das gemeinsame Arbeiten am selben Ort. Vielmehr gehen sie getrennt voneinander vor: Einer kreiert eine Arbeit und stellt diese anschliessend dem anderen zu, der als Reaktion darauf seine hinzufügt. Dadurch entsteht die charakteristische Dualität der Werke: bei Boys die Bildpaare Fussballer und Wildwestfigur. Von wem welches Werk stammt, ist irrelevant.
Die Serie Boys ist 2008 entstanden, als erste Arbeit nach einer zehnjährigen Schaffenspause von ALMA. Das Werk reflektiert, was die beiden Künstler als Kinder gesammelt haben. ALMA greift damit nicht nur das Thema Sammeln auf, sondern auch jenes des Kopierens. Als Vorlage für die Fussballer dienten Panini- Sammelbilder der WM 1970. Während die Fussballer im Verfahren des Linolschnitts mit einer sogenannten verlorenen Platte hergestellt wurden, handelt es sich bei den Figuren des «Wilden Westens» um Intarsien aus bemaltem Papier.
Als Duo ALMA führen Alf Hofstetter (*1956, Glarus) und Max Markus Frei (*1958, Luzern) seit 1987 einen intensiven künstlerischen Dialog. Die beiden Künstler arbeiten getrennt voneinander an ihrem Teil des Werks, der Austausch findet über das Gespräch und die Reaktion auf das Formulierte des andern statt. Die individuelle Autorschaft rückt bei dieser Arbeitsweise in den Hintergrund. 1989 gründen die beiden Künstler die Stiftung ALMA und verpflichten sich, Referenzwerke aus jeder Schaffensphase in diese einzubringen. Mit diesem Vorgehen entziehen sie dem kapitalistischen Kunstmarkt sukzessiv Werke. Sitz der Stiftung ist das Kunst(Zeug)Haus. Die Stiftungsurkunde entwarf Peter Bosshard (1942–2018).

Since 1987, ALMA has been a collaboration between two artists, Alf Hofstetter and Max Markus Frei. To them, collaboration usually does not mean working together at the same place. Rather, they proceed separately: one creates a work and then presents it to the other, who in turn adds a piece in response. This is also where the characteristic duality of their works comes from, as seen in Boys with the paired images of soccer players with cowboys and Native Americans. Which work was created by which artist remains irrelevant.
The Boys series was created in 2008, as the first work after a ten-year creative hiatus by ALMA. The work deals with what the artists collected as children. ALMA not only addresses the theme of collecting but also copying. Panini collectible cards from the World Cup 1970 served as templates for the soccer players. While the soccer players were made using linocut with the “lost plate” technique, the Wild West figures are inlays made of painted paper.
As the duo ALMA, Alf Hofstetter (*1956, Glarus) and Max Markus Frei (*1958, Lucerne) have engaged in an intensive artistic dialogue since 1987. The two artists work separately on their respective parts of the artwork, and their interaction takes place through exchanging and reacting to each other’s contributions. This working method deemphasizes individual authorship. In 1989, they established the ALMA Foundation, with a commitment to preserve reference works from each phase of their oeuvre, thus gradually removing works from the capitalist art market. The foundation is based in the Kunst(Zeug)Haus, and its charter was drafted by Peter Bosshard (1942–2018).
